We understand that in order to learn young people need to feel relaxed and safe in their environment. Our 1-1 programmes are tailored to meet the specific needs of each individual to progress at their own pace. We specialise in creating a learning space where young people feel listened to and understood and most of all not judged. Through a series of sessions, we use donkeys, nature and open countryside and small woodlands to explore the holistic care of and keeping of donkeys. The animal-centred approach, gently supports young people to learn about and care for equines, what is required for their well-being and how they can contribute to the animals' welfare. The experience of learning through experience, understanding of animal needs and behaviour, and the feedback they receive from the animals often helps young people to draw parallels to their own needs, and what makes them feel safe, happy and supported. They are quickly able to see how they are impacting the animals responses from the reactions they receive in return. Being able to reflect on this and consider alternative strategies to bring about different results, is both empowering and also builds confidence. Through learning about the animal's welfare needs, individuals can feel empowered to speak up about their own needs, often regaining a sense of well-being. This approach underpins much of the work that we do. Our 1:1 equine enrichment programmes offer a limited number of places per year and our next intake will be in 2024.
